Details on 2012 Blobfest Shorty Awards Released

I had been waiting for a while now for information on this year’s Blobfest and more importantly, the Shorty Award short film contest that goes along with it. Last year, my daughter Jillian won the Fans Favorite Award for her short film, Blob Zombie. Since that day, she has been storyboarding her next endeavor. Today those details were finally released. Here are the details for the awards from the Blobfest Facebook page.

"Greetings ! It's the good Dr. Frank N. Stone here to provide the official information for our annual short film contest - THE SHORTY'S - its just one of the ways we pay tribute to the late director of The Blob -
Irvin "Shorty" Yeaworth Jr.

- Theme "THE END" OR IS IT ? '' bwahahaha...
- Films must be no longer than 5 minutes.

Entries will be judged in 3 age categories:

12 – Under

12 – 18
18 - Over

All entries must be family friendly
To enter your film, post it on YouTube and email the link to:

Deadline is June 29, 2012

Winners will be notified by email. Note: a DVD copy of winning film must be delivered to the Colonial Theatre no later than July 9, 2012. The winning films will be shown on the Big Screen as part of the Friday Night Run-Out Show!!!  Any questions send to franknstone@comcast.net

A Short Script Attempt

Two years ago, as part of the the 10th Anniversary Blobfest, they had a short film script-writing contest to offset their short film contest. As a writer it was a challenge to in 500 words or less, create the missing scene from The Blob.

If you are familiar with the movie, this would be about what happened in the bar on Second Street that is talked about in the movie but never shown. In scene 240, Sgt. Burt recounts how he stopped at the Second Street bar while making his rounds, finding no one there. Also, when two of the teens stop in another bar to help rally the town against the monster, the bartender tells them about some excitement at the Second Street bar earlier that night.

While my entry did not win, I held my head high as it was the first screenplay of any type that I finished.

239A. CAMERA PANS PAST HARLEY JOHNSON BEHIND THE BAR AND DOLLIES IN ON MARTY WATSON AND THE  DEER TROPHY HANGING ON THE WALL ABOVE THE JUKEBOX.

TIGHT TWO SHOT MARTY AND THE DEER FAVORING MARTY (IN A JOVIAL MOOD).

MARTY: (TO HARLEY) it’s about time for a hunting trip. I was talking about it earlier at work, some of the guys are heading out this weekend. Buddy up here on the wall could use a friend.

HARLEY: (STOCKING GLASSES BEHIND BAR) Yeah, it has been a while. I remember the trip when we bagged that one.

MARTY: That was a cold one… The wife still reminds me of how sick I got when we came back. I’d readily do it again though; it’s about time to get away.

HARLEY: Same here, though, Ida would just prefer me saying around town, playing bridge or attending the gardening club meetings. Ever since Bobby left for college, it has been the same thing.

MARTY: I miss those trips with Bobby and Joe. What is Bobby up to these days?

HARLEY: Bobby is good, studying medicine, wants to be a doc. He says, everyone gets sick and there is a fortune to be made in medicine. I hope he is right; this education is costing me a fortune. So, give me a big tip tonight (LAUGHS).

MARTY: (STILL LOOKING AT DEER) Sure thing buddy. I wonder if we can get ol’ Joe to join us. I haven’t seen him since he moved up into the hills after his wife was killed on the highway.

HARLEY: Yeah, he took that hard. It has been almost two years now. No one has really seen him. Say… I have Monday off, let’s go up Old North Road, find him and make plans.

MARTY: Sounds great, just like old times.

CAMERA PANS TO THE EDGE OF THE BAR AND SHOWS THE BLOB CREEPING TOWARD HARLEY.

HARLEY: (PLACING WHISKEY BOTTLE ON BAR) I can pick you up around 4… What the… (DROPS BOTTLE – SHATTERS) Marty!

MARTY: (TURING TOWARD BAR) What is going on over there? HARLEY… You there? Harley stop fooling around, you think you are one of those kids? Kids these days, HARLEY!

CAMERA PANS WITH MARTY TOWARD EMPTY BAR WITH SHATTERED BOTTLE ON TOP. SCREAMS CONTINUE TO EMINATE FROM BEHIND.

MARTY: (CAMERA PANS WITH HIM AS HE MOVES TOWARD BROKEN BOTTLE) Harley… You… OK… Harley.

MEDIUM CLOSE SHOT OF CHARLIE AT BAR PEERING OVER TO SEE WHAT IS HAPPENING TO HARLEY.

MARTY: (STARTLED, OVERTAKEN BY FRIGHT) HARLEY! MONSTER! (BACKPEDDLING INTO TABLE) Oh God, what the—M—M--MONSTER!

Panicked and in shock, CAMERA TRUCKS WITH HIM REVEALING CREATURE MOVING OVER BAR TOWARD HIM.

MARTY: (SHAKING AND SCARED) MONSTER! I must Warn everyone, HARLEY! (TURNING AND RUNNING TOWARD DOOR – CAMERA TRUCKS WITH HIM) HELP! Mon--monster--MONSTER!

WIDE ANGLE FROM BAR UP STREET TOWARDS STOPLIGHT FOLLOWING MARTY AS HE IS RUNNING AWAY.

MARTY: (RUNNING, LOOKING OVER HIS SHOULDER BACK TOWARD BAR) MONSTER! HELP ME! NO… Dead, Harley’s dead… Mon--monster--MONSTER!

The Blobfest Run Out 2011

The guys over at the eerieTube did this great video of the Run Out from Blobfest 2011. At about the 25 second mark you can catch me and the rest of the realm running out on the left side of the screen.

It has been a fun two days hanging out in Phoenixville, PA with other fans of the Sci-Fi Classic The Blob at Blobfest 2011. Today was no exception. Honestly, there is nothing better than watching the classic flick on the big screen. Couple that with some great entertainment and it was Awesome! Here are some more pictures from the weekend.

Last night I wrote a quick post about Blobfest and Jillian receiving her Shorty Award for Fan Favorite. Here is the video of the ceremony including Blob Zombie and all of its Big Screen glory. Thanks to everyone who voted, hopefully, Jillian will continue her film career and create something even better.

Blob Zombie Wins!

It was a great moment watching Jillian head to the stage as she was awarded her Fan's Choice Shorty  Award for her movie Blob Zombie! This was a great flick and it was awesome hearing the crowd laugh and almost sing along to the great flick.

Blobfest Starts Tomorrow

Tomorrow night marks the start of Blobfest in Pheonixville, Pa. The festivities start with a stage show and run-out to pay homage to the classic Sci-Fi gem. Luckily we have tickets for the event and will be there to enjoy all of the festivities (including the screening of Jillian's flick Blob Zombie which won the fans choice award).  Here is a schedule of events for all of the great entertainment tomorrow! I will blog about the run-out and Saturday's events tomorrow night!

We are halfway through the voting for the Blobfest 2011 Short Awards and Jillian's short film Blob Zombie  is holding it own with 32 percent of the votes. The Shorty’s Contest is our way of paying homage to the late, great Shorty Yeaworth, Jr., director of The Blob. This year is our 5th annual contest and the films just keep getting better and better! To enter the contest just round up some willing victims, er friends and neighbors, and make a short film that is centered on The Blob, Blobfest, or sci-fi in general. Last year, I made a video for the contest (which won Fans Choice). This year, my daughter Jillian wanted to try her hand at filmmaking, and actually created a better flick than I did. Here is her movie Blob Zombie!

I just got back from Blobfest 2010 where I found out that my short film won for Fan Favorite! Thanks to all that voted! Pics to follow...

BLOBFEST 2010

Just two days remain until Blobfest! The annual 3 day event in Phoenixville, PA in celebration of the 1958 horror movie "The Blob," starring Steve McQueen. Anyone in the Philadelphia area this is a great event! Hope to see you there.
