Continuing my trip into my youth, I decided to revisit The Gore-Gore Girls from 1972. While I did not see this film for the first time until the 1980s, it was one of the films that made me a fan of Herschell Gordon Lewis, and what can be accomplished on a meager budget.
Plot/ Strippers at a sleazy club are being mutilated at an alarming rate. A pretty reporter enlists the aid of a debonair detective to solve the case and land her a front-page story. Soon, the two are wading through evidence against a vegetable-pulverizing freak, a creepy college student, and a group of angry feminists.
While not my favorite movie by Herschell Gordon Lewis, Gore-Gore Girls does rank near the top of that list. I honestly love the sleazy, almost porn feel that it emanates. As with most of his films, the flick suffers from many of the negative trademarks like terrible acting, horrid dialogue and technical ineptitude. Let’s face it, this is a BAD movie. However, it also boasts some vintage gore, go-go dancing and even a plot. Yes, there is a cheese factor and the strippers are a bit dated, but that is what makes this movie great (that and some truly brutal kill scenes). This movie is not for everyone, but if you like gore, boobies and other films by Lewis, you will enjoy this one.
I'm one of the few people I know that actually defends this movie.
ReplyDeleteI like it because it's H.G. Lewis poking fun at the movies he made famous. The gore is gross, excessive and ridiculous.
Is this for everyone? Hell no. Is it for most people? Again, no. I like it though.
Some time ago I made a comic page of this film's intro scene. Check it out if you like...
