The Autopsy of Jane Doe (2016)

After clearing my mind with a mindless Godzilla flick, it was time to get back to some real horror. After a long night of softball (practice and watching a game), my selection for last night was the 2016 entry The Autopsy of Jane Doe.

Plot/ A father and son, both coroners, are pulled into a complex mystery while attempting to identify the body of a young woman, who was apparently harboring dark secrets.

This is a movie I have been looking forward to watching. While I did not know much about the storyline or what to expect, from the few promo clips and artwork I had seen, I thought it could be something that I would enjoy. I was right, as this was one of the best horror films I have seen in some time and it backs up my thoughts that this has been a tremendous year for the genre. There was a lot to like with some creepy and dark atmospheric elements, some outstanding make-up effects with some graphic scenes, solid performances, and a nice mixture of horror and suspense within a thought-out storyline that was quite engaging. Yes, there are a few clichéd jump scares thrown it and the ending could have been a touch better, but those are but minor flaws inside this tremendous film. In the end, if you are a true horror fan, you should definitely enjoy this one. True, some of the autopsy scenes may not be for everyone, but it is well worth watching.

Alien Autopsy: Fact or Fiction? (1995)

Documentaries always seem to pop up into my viewing rotation, as I love researching different aspects of the outer edges of reality. For me, this is just a commonality and part of what we all should be doing on a regular basis. Research is fun, especially research on the topic of Aliens and UFOs, as there is so much information out there that fact that governments refuse to disclose the truth is laughable. My flick for the evening was the controversial 1995 documentary Alien Autopsy: Fact or Fiction?

Plot/ This provocative FOX Network television special investigates the purported Alien Autopsy footage that was allegedly filmed by the United States military after the legendary UFO crash near Roswell, New Mexico in 1947.

Documentaries are always fun and interesting, especially those that stir debate and that was the case with this one after it aired in 1995. While it has now been an admitted hoax (although there are still lingering questions with the 50-year old film), in many ways this one re-ignited the Roswell Crash Investigation for many investigators. While there was nothing new from a research perspective of the famous UFO crash, the documentary went through expert commentary for the validity of the autopsy footage while showing the different aspects of the autopsy. Honestly, it was extremely believable when released and still holds some merit today. Not for everyone, this is a great documentary for anyone interested in researching the Roswell UFO incident.

Autopsy (2008)

After watching the Ravens beat down the Chiefs, I was hoping to find another bloodbath. My choice for the evening is Autopsy, from the third edition of the After Dark Horrorfest.

Plot / In this entry of the After Dark Horrorfest, A young woman tries to find her injured boyfriend in a bizarre and dangerous hospital.

It is funny, sometimes things just pop up in a way that you do not understand. For the longest time, I thought this was a different movie and stayed away. Looking back it is funny, because I was really missing out. I really enjoyed this flick, and I believe it is truly underrated. Yes, it is far from perfect with some choppy pacing and uneven moments, but for the most part, it is an enjoyable blood-filled delight. The plot is basic, but it is the effects and cinematography that really bring this movie to life. A definite must see for gore fans!
