XX (2017)

As I sit here on the holiday weekend hoping for the rain to leave, it was nice to take a break from movies as I have spent time in Twin Peaks and American Gods this week. After two days of investigations and research posts, I decided to get back to a movie with the 2017 anthology XX.

Plot/ XX is a new horror anthology with a gender twist - all segments will be helmed by female directors and will star female leads. The directors have been given free creative rein within budget and time constraints, but all of the segments themselves will involve the horror genre.

Having spent the past couple of days working on a few different pieces of material for the blog, it was nice t get back into some horror. When I saw this anthology at Family Video, I thought the idea of watching a modern anthology would be perfect. While this one did have some positives, I don’t feel that it totally reached its potential. The animation used as the bridge between installments was amazing, the stories had some interesting moments, and the overall feel was entertaining. Of course, the four different segments will have different fans, my favorite was the fourth, Her Only Living Son (although The Box was pretty good), but they all have different attributes that could appeal to a viewer (The Birthday Party and Don’t Fall are just okay). Unfortunately, there are a lot of clichés sprinkled in, the strict run-time limits the depth of the stories, there is no flow or connecting elements to the shorts, and the atmosphere never reaches a tense level. Overall, leaving this a somewhat flawed anthology. In the end, this is not the worst movie out there, but that is not saying to run out and grab it. If you are a fan of indie horror or anthologies, you can do much worse.

Stitches (2012)

Sometimes I enjoy some humor mixed in with the horror I watch. Unfortunately, finding some original/horror comedy that is worth watching can be a challenge. My next selection was not a challenge, 2012s evil clown flick Stitches.

Plot/ A clown comes back from the dead to haunt those who took his life during a fatal party mishap.

while I had my week silence, i had to found at least one evil clown movie to watch and I am glad i found Stitches. Yes, this issue a genre that has been done before, but this one actually adds something to the horror/comedy genre that is actually refreshing. For a low budget entry it does a great job mixing comedy and some over-the-top gore into some creative deaths. The acting is solid and there is just enough storyline and laughable to keep you entertained. Sure, the begun beginning is not the greatest and it actually brings the flick down a notch and there is an overall lack of characterization, but that is not the end of the world. In the end, this is an interesting joy horror comedy that actually embraces it's place within the slasher genre. Not a perfect movie, but it is worth watching.Give it a go, you may be surprised.

Jack's Back (1988)

It was still nice to see the wife and daughters when I woke this morning. Unfortunately, I had to go to work at the institute and could not stay home and hang out. At least we got to do some stuff in the winter wonderland that is outside tonight. When we got home, it was time to catch up on the blog with my next review, that selection, the 1988 thriller Jack's Back.

Plot/ A serial killer in Los Angeles is recreating the historic murder's of Jack the Ripper on 100th anniversary of the killings.

As a researcher, I have always been interested in the case of Jack the Ripper and love it when I find movies with that sitting at its core. That, of course, was my big draw to this one. While not the best in its genre, it does take on the story of old Jack in a very different manner. The storyline is interesting, the acting solid, and the cinematography does a great job at creating some atmosphere while presenting some thought provoking questions. Yes, there are some cliche moments, the pacing is off, and the ending is somewhat predictable, but that does little to bring it down. In the end, this was a solid entry that takes a refreshing  approach to the genius of Jack the Ripper. If you are interested  that subject, give this one a shot. While it is not a perfect thriller, it is a worth a watch.

The Best Birthday Cakes!

As another year passes and I have to celebrate another birthday because my daughters will not let me forget how old I am, at least my lovely wife Brenda pays homage to my likes and my horror fetish by creating themed cakes...
