Paul (2011)

There are so many different genre’s of movies to watch and for me, I do like to break out of my norm from time to time. Of course, with the Halloween season upon us, I always have plenty of choices out there to make my evenings interesting.  Being on the road in Chesapeake for the evening, it was cool to watch something different, with a little humor. My movie selection for the evening is the 2011 science fiction / comedy, Paul.

Plot/ Two Sci-Fi geeks take a pilgrimage to America's UFO heartland. While there, they accidentally meet an alien who brings them on an insane road trip that alters their universe forever.

I am all for Sci-Fi flicks that add a twist of humor to the genre. Of course, usually these come packaged as some PG-13 romp targeted at a younger audience, something that drives me insane. Sure, that is the trend in every genre (especially horror anymore) and it is ruining creativity. This flick, while decently close to vest, does a great job at mixing comedy into the genre. The storyline is sound and keeps the viewer drawn in with just enough twists to make everything work, the acting is outstanding, the subtle references to Sci-Fi classics are perfect and the CGI works. While it is extremely entertaining, if there is one drawback, it is that there was room for a lot more laugh-out-loud comedy from Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. In the end, this may not be Shaun of the Dead funny, but it well worth watching and enjoying. If you have not seen it, check it out!
