As a horror fan, there are some movies that you look forward
to from the time you hear about the project. Of course, sometimes you become frustrated
as the overall quality never seems to match the expectations, but at other times,
you become surprised. That was the case with the original The ABCs of Death. On
Tuesday, I was able to see another one of those movies with the sequel, 2014s The ABCs of Death 2.
Plot/ Another 26-chapter anthology that showcases death in
all its vicious wonder and brutal beauty.
I remember watching the original ABCs of Death and being
blown away by the diversity of movies in the anthology. It was amazing! While I
believe that as a whole the original was better than this entry, there was a
lot to like inside this one. Complete with more darkly comedic elements, there
was the same ambitions and risks within this one, and there were definitely
some entries that pushed the limits. I especially loved the way the name and
meaning of the short was withheld until the segment was over, a nice touch that
added some intrigue. Yes, some of the entries were better than others. My
favorites were:
D is for Deloused
J is for Jesus
K is for Knell
R is for Roulette
S is for Split
T is for Torture Porn
V is for Vacation
Z is for Zygote
As with every anthology, some installments are not quite as
delectable as the others. In this case, a couple of them stood out in that
fashion, including:
B is for Badger
G is for Grandad
L is for Legacy
U is for Utopia
X is for Xylophone
Technically, there were many technical improvements to the depths in this film; however, these entries definitely came off as being a touch restrained in comparison to the original. In the end, this may be an uneven anthology, but it is entertaining and interesting to watch. If you love short films and horror, give it a shot! You should enjoy it.
