Darkness (2002)

It was another day day outside, but it was not a total loss as I was able to make some good progress in the toy building.  I can actually see my desk again. When I finished that,  I decided to kick back and watch the 2002 entry Darkness.

Plot: A teenage girl moves into a remote country house with her family, only to discover that their gloomy new home has a horrifying past that threatens to destroy the family.

I didn't know what to expect from this one,  but came away rather intrigued.  While,  it did have some of the typical supernatural elements,  it was armor to maintain  a suspenseful tone throughout. The scripting was awesome,  the performances outstanding, and the cinematography and direction created some tremendous atmosphere. Now, Iam sure there will be parts that turn viewers off with the slower pace and the lack of typical horror tropes, but those are only benefits in my eyes. In the end,  this one is an excellent independent film and one that should be watched.

Phoenix Forgotten (2017)

After doing some softball drills with a couple players last night, I decided last night that I was going to step away from the computer and relax. Plus, I had Shin Godzilla to watch and wanted to focus on that. However, that is not the next movie up for review, that movie is the 2017 mockumentary, Phoenix Forgotten.

Plot/ 20 years after three teenagers disappeared in the wake of mysterious lights appearing above Phoenix, Arizona, unseen footage from that night has been discovered, chronicling the final hours of their fateful expedition.

This was a movie that I wanted to see when it came out, but decided to wait for the video release. As a person that saw the live coverage of the Phoenix Lights on national television, I have always been convinced that more happened there that night than we will ever be told. For me, this was a interesting mockumentary that adds a fictional twist to the true story of the Phoenix Lights and a movie that had more than a few believable moments. The performances were decent, the storyline interesting, and the 1990s feel was spot on. Yes, this is partly a found footage flick, so that will likely turn some viewers off, the pacing was a touch slow early on, and the ending added some frustration, but overall those elements really did not detract from the feel of the film. In the end, keeping the true story of the Phoenix Lights is an extremely important endeavor and movies such as this will not let the world forget about that event. Sure, this movie isn’t perfect, but it also isn’t terrible. Check it out, you may be like me and enjoy it.

A Cure for Wellness (2016)

There are times where I enjoy thought-provoking thrillers more than any other genres. Unfortunately, finding entertaining films that do not follow a clichéd and predictable template is becoming more and more challenging. Fortunately, that was not the case with the 2016 entry A Cure for Wellness.

Plot/ An ambitious young executive is sent to retrieve his company's CEO from an idyllic but mysterious wellness center at a remote location in the Swiss Alps but soon suspects that the spa's treatments are not what they seem.

This is a movie that I wanted to see when it was in the theaters, but unfortunately, I was not able to align my schedule and had to wait. Fortunately, I was able to get it tonight and found it exactly what I somewhat expected. Visually, this film is amazing and offers some of the best technical execution I have seen in some time. The performances are solid, the soundtrack works in creating an unsettling mood, and the storyline is interesting (even though there are some predictable elements). Sure, not everyone will enjoy the ending, the movie develops at a slow pace, and there are a bunch of unanswered questions, but those do little to bring down the positives. In the end, this one will not be for everyone. However, if you enjoy creepy surrealistic psychological thrillers, this one is for you. Give it a shot!

Green Room (2015)

After sitting through my share of low budget anthologies recently, I figured it was time to change some things up. Last night, following a trip to Family Video, I decided to give 2015s Green Room a chance.

Plot/ A band straying into a secluded part of the Pacific Northwest stumbles onto a horrific act of violence. Because they are the only witnesses, they become the targets of a terrifying gang of skinheads who want to make sure all the evidence is eliminated.

After a couple of uneven entries, this one changed all of my frustrations. An intense thriller, this one definitely falls closer to horror than the thriller genre. The acting is solid throughout, the scripting does a masterful job at creating atmosphere and tension while keeping the movie realistic, and the tone/pace of the film and violence is perfect. While I enjoyed the entire package, some viewers may not like all of the violence and the realism created in this world. To me, that is the only potential downfall of the film. In the end, if you enjoy violent and tension filled movies, this one is definitely for you; check it out!

Holidays (2016)

I love being back into the swing of watching horror movies and blogging, it helps me keep my mind engaged as I dissect my next writing project. The next film that I watched was somewhat of a surprise, 2016s anthology Holidays.

Plot/ Nine filmmakers present horror stories that revolve around Valentine's Day, Saint Patrick's Day, Easter, Mother's Day, Father's Day, Halloween, Christmas, and New Year's Eve.

When I put this one on, I had no idea what to expect as anthologies can be all over the board when it comes to coherent moments and quality. What I found with this one was much of the same with a mixture of uneven shorts featuring a wide array of approaches to the different holidays covered by the directors. Overall, the stories ranged from unbelievable to ludicrous, and touched on many different topics. Yes, there were a few that were pushed the limits (Kevin Smith’s Halloween comes to mind), but that was to be expected. Incredibly, the film featured some solid performances and some intriguing storylines (Father’s Day and Christmas were my favorites), although I am sure that it won’t appeal to everyone. In the end, if you live mindless horror anthologies, this one is for you. Give it shot!

Happy Birthday Edgar - Mortal Fears and Open Wounds

Today is the anniversary of the birth of Edgar Allan Poe, and if you are familiar with this blog or me as a person, you would already understand the meaning. In honor of Poe, I decided to write a pastiche of Spirits of the Dead, to commemorate this important day. Poe has always been one of the major influences in my life, and without him, I probably would not write, and without writing, I would definitely be insane.

I

Through darkened days and unknown specters
Mysteries shadow truths inside spiraling emotions-
Empty thoughts, and even stranger dreams, give way
For my mind, realities fade.

II

Stillness overwhelms the vile depths,
   Reverie smothers the calm-but still
The forgotten rise and roam the abyss
Their hunger stronger than their will
Dreams overthrow the tyrants-solitude unbound
Calmness swallows thy heart: judgments unwound.

III

The gate, sacred seals, horses rise-
And the dead walk with souls despised
Foretold by scripture and desires once lost,
Mortal fears and open wounds survive the crossed-
Blessed implements stained by blood, opened doors,
For the path to salvation rose upon unseen shores
The chasm burns and the pure follow
Forsaken by seraphim set adrift in the shallows.

IV

Words are but verses that shall be composed,
Verses are but visions that must be transposed,
Revelations feed doubts; emptiness breeds fright
Choices wither- and reservations survive, at least for a night.

V

The truths- and the tainted flesh-cannot hide-
The souls of the damned drowned by pride,
Ancient riddles difficult to perceive,
An unfamiliar destiny left for me to conceive-
How this grew-an opportunity or prediction left for naught,
Or worse, a loathsome plague-the white horse forgot.

Dark City (1998)

Sometimes, I regret some of my choices, since they are journeys deep into the bowels of misery. Of course, that is my fault, as I tend to be impulsive when I see something instead of searching out something better. Fortunately, there are times when I decide to dig deeper, and find a movie that is worth watching, and at times, even inspirational. That was the case tonight, with the 1998 Sci-Fi entry, Dark City.

Plot/ A man struggles with memories of his past, including a wife he cannot remember, in a nightmarish world with no sun and run by beings with telekinetic powers who seek the souls of humans.

After suffering through that very forgettable Hellraiser installment, I was happy to break out Dark City. This is both one of the best, and one of my favorite Sci-Fi films of the 1990s. Honestly, I have no idea why it never reached anything other than cult status, it is worthy of so much more than that. Cold, dark, atmospheric, and complete with outstanding performances, a layered and complex script, and most importantly, a thought provoking storyline that leaves you inspired by what can be accomplished with originality within a Sci-Fi landscape. Even the ending, which still feels a touch out of place, can do nothing to derail the impressive gothic world created in the entertaining feature. In the end, Dark City is one of the most underappreciated Sci-Fi movies in the genre, and is cinematographically above many films that many place above it. If you have not seen this brilliant entry, search it out and give it a shot. You will not be disappointed.

Black Water Vampire (2014)

Last night I took a break from writing, as I had a homework project I had to finish. While building an inspirational poster for my psychology class,  I decided Ruthi venture into the vampire genre for my next selection, 2014s Black Water Vampire.

Plot/ A documentary film crew investigate a series of brutal killings known as the Black Water murders. As they delve deeper into the story, they stumble upon a horrifying secret. One they may not survive.

As a fan of low budget cinema, I am usually excited when I find something that I never heard of. That was the case with this one, although I surmised early on that this one was going to be a cliche-fest. While much of it feels like a remake of the Blair Witch Project, this one at least has an interesting ending, believable acting, and a couple of interesting moments sprinkled in. Unfortunately, the cliche gets old leading up to the twist at the end, the pacing is off, and there is zero atmosphere. choir me. In the end, this one did nothing for me as i was not captivated by any of it, but I am also not the biggest Blair Witch mockumentary-style fan. If you links those, give it a shot. If you are like me, stay away.

What Have We Done?

Even after listening to that tape for the umpteenth time, I cannot fathom what he was experiencing. It all seems so unreal, impossible, there is no way anyone could survive in that state, let alone be cognizant to what was happening. These creatures, there is no way that they could feel anything; they were undead, I think.

Maybe I should say thought. In researching the events, I stumbled across some documentation involving the scientists that may be responsible for this outbreak. It seems as though they were conducting some apparently over-funded yet secretive experiments similar to the ones conducted at Montauk so many years ago. Ironically, the results, while similar, had a much deadlier outcome. Unfortunately, the agency that funded these organized torture sessions is not readily available, a fact that drives my research. The truth must be told. From one of the office files of the floating laboratory, I found this transcript. Now, I may never share how this document reached my hands, but the account will show how unprepared the group was to quarantine any type of outbreak.

The impossible has happened
One of the specimens managed to endure the process
Surviving to see the light of day
Mutating beyond our capacity to conceive
Our agenda never allowed for their freedom after vaccination
The world is far from ready to comprehend the truth
Discover our manic exploitation of the meek
The gates of ridicule would open
We would all be ruined

How could we leave sector two unguarded?
Idiots… They are all idiots
The best security money can buy, honestly?
That is what those feeble old men said in their brief
We should have taken more precautions
We are smarter than that
Now, the disease is free
Our only hope is the quarantine
Or eradication of the contamination, whatever comes first

Sir, you won’t believe what we are seeing out here
Oh God… It’s… It’s like … The gates of Hell have opened before my eyes
The virus is spreading throughout the city
Quarantine is out of the question
These vile creatures
They are… They are everywhere
The outbreak is uncontrollable
There are… Stop… Fuck… No…
Silence

This cannot be happening
What have we done?
What have we created?
Our plans are evaporating right in front of our eyes
We must escape this vessel before the others awaken
Before we become their experiment in pleasure
Their host
Our facility is not safe
Sound the evacuation alarm
We are ruined

Funny, it seems as though the scientists were more concerned with their reputation or financial wealth than the outcome of terror that was at hand.

Magic Magic (2013)

As Thanksgiving winds down, I wanted to watch something outside my normal pattern. While last night’s I Am ZoZo was a disappointment, I was convinced that my next selection had to be better. After some debate, I decided upon the 2013 indie thriller Magic Magic.

Plot/ Alicia is stuck on a remote island off Chile with three of Sarah's friends, including Brink, an American exchange student with a sadistic streak. Bewildered, frightened, and unable to sleep, Alicia's reality becomes a nightmare from which there is no waking. Ancient indigenous rites, disturbing animal behavior, and captivating hypnotic trances come together in an intense exploration into the darkest corners... when the games go too far, reality unravels with astonishing and deadly consequences.

This is a strange movie. Definitely more of a psychological drama than thriller, there is a complex storyline here that is more detailed than some would like. In fact, the dark undertone and tremendous performances from some of the characters make it even more interesting. Yes, some will be misled by the synopsis, which attempt to push it toward the horror or thriller categories, but it is not that at all. The cinematography is solid, Juno Temple is amazing and the atmosphere is solid. Yes, the end leaves a bit to be desired and may add an overwhelming sense of confusion, there is little to no character development and the characters themselves may have been too detached. In the end, I found this an atmospheric and entertaining flick, but I am sure many will disagree. This one is definitely not for everyone, but if you are in for a complex and dark drama, give it a shot.

Evermore

As I stare off into the unknown, my perceptions waver
Until your beauty appears before me
Haunting my dismal view of the world
Tempting me with fantasies of your warm depths
Complicating my reality

There are times I can feel you near
Your gentle hands caressing my emptiness
Your soft voice breaking the silence of my thoughts
Alone I wake to face another day
Longing evermore for you

The embers of your passion come to life in my heart
Scorching forbidden desires into my soul
In my mind I can picture the ecstasy
The pleasures of our flesh as we touch
The fulfillment of everything ever unspoken between us

This sacred bond we share keeps me true
Alive to face the unsettling despair of loneliness
Wandering the damp corridors of darkness
Imagining my view from your thighs
Longing evermore for you

There are times that I stare off into the horizon
Dissecting the white patchwork splendor
All for just a glimpse of your unmatched pale beauty
For a moment, my reverie overtook reality
For a brief second you were near

There are times I stare off into the horizon
Dissecting the mysterious shadows
All for just a glance at your ravenous womb
For a moment the conduit was clear
Longing evermore for you

Your eyes entice me
Urging me to take control
To finally grasp what I yearn for
Now and forever holding your heart in my palm
Yet, one for eternity may never be enough

Your hands caress my every move
Easing into my dreams, harnessing all that I am
Finally our path is clear, our destiny in tune
One for eternity
Longing evermore

Truth or Fiction? Zombies...

Creatures of the night surround us
Romero laughs
His diabolic vision of despair
Of humor and laughter
A misleading masterpiece for those willing to understand the genius

Strangers unite
Fighting a plague of humanity before they fall prey
Victims, not innocent, but unforgiven of their sins
Their cannibalistic nature striking fear in us all
Not because of the sheer terror
Or their horrific deeds
But, for the primal nature lurking at our core

The taste of flesh as sweet as the fruit on the vine
The lure, the only difference
Or is it?
Instead of a snake in the garden
We are persuaded by desire
Carnal temptations leading us to flesh

At the heart, the snake and the pleasures are equal
These forbidden dreams considered taboo
So misunderstood, that the thought alone often spawns remorse
A lingering guilt that creates hatred
And yes, these monsters for us to cheer

The screens are full of surrealistic views of reality
Where the creatures indulge in the carnal feasts we covet
Where flesh and blood replace the love and hate we hold on a pedestal
In many ways, we are all alike
Zombies searching for companionship instead of brains
Embracing the taste of our lovers skin during passion

For us, our time is here, the day of reckoning is now
The Zombie Apocalypse has begun

I brought out this piece from an upcoming fictional work to demonstrate exactly how far the Zombie Mythos has changed over generations. Beginning in the Middle Ages, people started to believe that the souls of the departed could return to this realm in different forms. Many accounts of revenants, or someone raised from the grave, were documented by noted European writers of the period, describing terrifying encounters with these emancipated corpses of the underworld. These encounters were not limited to Europe, tales of the undead can be found across the globe from China to South America

Today, modern zombies are portrayed in both books and film quite differently then their true place in legend and lore. The transition of the undead into these supernatural, flesh eating remnants of life can easily be traced back to classic Night of the Living Dead, a film that resonates today as loudly as it did when it was released in 1968.

Prior to this conversion into re-animated carnivores, legends of walking corpses and mind control could be summed up in one word, Voodoo; the ancient often misunderstood religion that in many locations still conjures thoughts of fear and terror in the collective. the idea of real zombies is unique to voodoo, with the Creole word zombi derived from Nzambi, a West African Snake God named Damballah Wedo of Niger-Congo origin.

Before going further in-depth on these infamous creatures and their real life existence, I want to lead you through a brief stroll through the history and foundation of this path. This religion is based soundly in Haïtian beliefs and supersitions. In fact, the word Voodoo, is derived from the word vodu in the Fon language of Dahomey, meaning spirit or god. In research, it is easy to trace this way of life back to the seventeenth century, brought to the West Indies slaves captured primarily from the kingdom of Dahomey, an empire that encompassed parts of what is  known today as West Africa. This word also describes the multifaceted spiritual belief system practiced by these unwilling tenants of the New World.  Recent studies have indicated that nearly 60 million people claim to practice voodoo or similar religions worldwide.

Voodoo, like many other religions, involves the belief in one supreme god, Bon Dieu, and a hierarchy of spirits called Loa. These spirits are closely related to African Gods and often represent nature and the dead. They consist or two primary groups, the Rada (helpful or good) and the Petro (dangerous and evil). The ideals of good and evil, lie at the heart of everything practiced in this religion, even their priests.  In traditional lore,  the Houngan or Mambo practice White Magic (good) and the Bokor or Caplata practice Black Magic (Evil).

In practicing Voodoo, a once normal person can be transformed via zombification through a spell or potion by a Bokor, dying and eventually returning to life as a mindless robot, incapable free thought or will, destined to suffer through eternity controlled entirely by the zombie master.

There are many examples of zombies in modern day Haiti to back up these claims. One of the more famous occurrences is that of Dictator Papa Doc Duvallier (1957 to 1971), who controlled a private army called Tonton Macoutes. Eyewitnesses to the strange behavior exhibited of this elite guard described them as being in a trance-like state, following every command of the dictator.  Ironically, Duvallier led a Voodoo church, often claiming he would rise from the ashes and rule again.

While there have been cases where these creations have regained some mental capacity, these incidents are extremely rare. One such case is of a man named Caesar who returned 18-years after his death, to marry, have three children and die again, 30- years later.

To me, one cannot disregard the historic importance of these beliefs and the possibility of the undead walking amongst us. However, it is extremely unfortunate that the mass appeal of the Zombie in popular literature and film reduces this religion to something it is not. Voodoo is not just a form of sorcery or a form of black witchcraft, and it is far from the cannibalistic practices portrayed on the silver screen that soils the reputation of not only the practice but of the Haitian culture as well. Voodoo, like Catholicism, Lutheranism, or Paganism is a valuable and viable religious practice for those that choose that path and should be treated with the same respect.

Triskaidekaphobia - For Friday the 13th

Triskaidekaphobia

Such a dark day in the world
Leaders defiled
The protectors destroyed in your name
Not by the masses that follow
But, from the hypocrisy of medieval royalty
For what - your secrets?
Jealousy? Fear?
Maybe it was just their shame from following the false prophet
The sinner who hid behind his disciples
And worse, women and children
Spouting lies of redemption
Preaching abstinence instead of indulgence
Creating turmoil in the perfect world
.. ..
Through it all, you stood tall
These destroyers of forged faith were blind
Failing to harness the power of your minions
By creating a day of homage of their transgressions
They granted you eternal life
History crying tears of truths in your name
You will never be forgotten
You Baphomet, will live forever
Like the Templar’s, your followers will bleed for you
Carrying on the traditions past down by the strong
Your enigma, a mystery to most
A companion to some
A day of fear to the meek
That day is today, Friday the 13th
.. ..

Something Lovecraftian from my book Walking Before Dawn- The Man By The Sea

He stands before the depths
Staring at the crossroads ahead
Deciding what bed to lay
To his right, the teeth of leviathan
Glistening in the murky underbelly of existence
To his left, only dismay and destruction
The great chasm lies ahead
Decisions at hand

His path is his path
He must face reality
Yes or no
North or south
Left or right
Good or evil
Around any corner could be salvation
Alone
Waiting to be captured

His heart pounds
Pulling toward the despair
But, his head
His eyes
Feel one with leviathan’s lair

Should he venture into the unknown?
Does he have a choice?
Standing on deck
Searching for the clarity
The answers
An empty soul being taken against his will
The sun sets
Tears fall
Is his last breath near?

The unquiet battle rages on
Turmoil grows
The voices cry out
Screams and laughter haunt his mind
His lifeless shell stands alone
The sea?
He steps toward the destruction and dismay
His last whisper
Goodbye my friend
Leviathan mourns
