This is Not Always What It Seems

I can’t believe that it has been two days since the Phoenix Arts Center's Ten Minute Play Fest came to an end and Not Always What It Seems received such a great reception. Honestly, I am still humbled by the experience and have a newfound confidence that is driving me to focus on creativity. In fact, the ideas are already churning around in my head and I just have to put everything together and decide what I want to focus on.

Today, I was surprised as Brenda finished the upload of the video recording of the play. So, for those of you who missed seeing it in person, give it a look and let me know what you think.

Oculus (2013)

Last night I finally had a chance to relax after a miserable drive home. Luckily for me, Bren had a made a trip to the video store and found me a couple of gems. First up for review is one of the movies that I have been looking forward to, the 2013 supernatural themed Oculus.

Plot/ A woman tries to exonerate her brother, who was convicted of murder, by proving that the crime was committed by a supernatural phenomenon.

Lately, I have struggled to find a movie that has told a layered story. That all changed last night when I finally watched Oculus. While not overly scary, or gory, this slow burn does a great job a mixing flashbacks with present day events to conjure a detailed storyline. The atmosphere is dark and heavy, the performances (especially the children) are solid, and there was enough creepiness to at least make me smile. Yes, some of the surreal moments clash with the flashbacks and there were some uneven characterizations, but those were only minor issues. In the end, this was one of the more entertaining and interesting horror flicks to come around in some time. Sure, it may feel a touch cliché in some spots, but it was a lot more than that and one of the best supernatural driven movies to come out in some time. Check this one out!

The Conjuring (2013)

After a fun first-week back teaching after my two-week break, I started my weekend by going to the drive-in. There is nothing better than to experience a horror or Sci-Fi flick outside in elements, where the wind through the trees, the moonlight, the fireflies, all ad something to the atmosphere. This double feature was awesome, which makes it even better. The first flick on the docket, the classic supernatural true story, The Conjuring.

Plot/ Paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren work to help a family terrorized by a dark presence in their farmhouse. Forced to confront a powerful entity, the Warrens find themselves caught in the most terrifying case of their lives.

I rarely tell people to run out and see a movie in the theater, but that is exactly what I am going to do with this one. Go see it! I was lucky enough to have some added atmosphere by seeing it in the drive-in, but this film did not need it. The storyline is awesome, the realism incredible and the solid cast works perfectly and keeps you drawn in throughout the movie. More importantly, cinematography creates an eerie atmosphere, which adds to the fact that this is based on a true story, and legendary paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren sit at the heart of this film, making the scares even more alive and realistic. There are some uneven moments, but those are rare. In the end, this may be the best paranormal themed movie to hit the screen in some time and will likely have the same effect on viewers today as The Shining had on me when I saw it at the drive-in so many years ago. Check it out!

Unexpected Paranormal Guests

Over time, a haunting can loose its power, almost dwindling away to nothing. However, a haunting will sometimes be recharged, especially in areas that possess a high amount of energy. While recharging a haunting is an inexact science, these following factors seem to provide a link. The factors are renovations, aura similarities, electrical fields or medium contact.

As ghost hunters, we would like nothing more than to experience the full force of a haunting, complete with full bodied apparitions, detailed sightings and viable evidence. However, recharging a haunting can also bring forth some unwanted side effects, one being demonic entities and potential possession.

Aura similarities usually take place when the spirit inside the location and a person in the house share a similar being and aura. When this happens that spirit may absorb energy from the person, providing a means of growing stronger. This can happen at any time, with any object. Remember that a spirit does not always attach itself to a location; it can attach itself to an item as well. Surely, everyone has seen haunted items on Ebay, don't laugh, some of these may be real.

Large electrical fields provide a great breeding ground for the paranormal. It is a known fact that paranormal activity is higher around electrical fields. The elevated energy field provides a great power source for spirit activity and a calling card for other unexplained activity including UFO sightings.

Medium contact is one of the most documented ways to interact and recharge a spirit. This contact can be made during a séance or by using an Ouija Board. Unfortunately, using these tools to contact the dead has been known to create many unexpected results and open doorways that are often more powerful then originally hoped for.

These dominant and unwanted demonic entities often find their way into this realm after being invited during what was conceived as a harmless act, usually by people dabbling into some form of divination they are unfamiliar with. Playing with Ouija Boards, automatic writing or other necromantic practices are usually the common tools used to open these vortexes, with Ouija Boards and automatic writing being the most familiar. Please note: You will never know exactly what you are contacting when you use these tools. It is quite possible that you could open a doorway that allows a malevolent spirit into this world instead of your original target. Always use caution!

I am sure that everyone reading this has heard of the Ouija Board, the Parker Brothers game that has caused uproar almost from the day it hit the shelves. From the French and German words for "yes," oui and ja, this game has brought divination into the mainstream. While some call it good-willed fun, others consider it work of the devil himself.

Precursors to the Ouija Board have been around for centuries, used by ancient oracles to communicate with the dead. Some form of these legends are sprinkled throughout history in many different and diverse cultures from China-to-Greece-to even-Native Americans, where they used these practices to find missing items or to obtain information from the unseen world.

Originally developing a huge following during (and after) World War I, when many citizens were caught up in attempting to contact their lost beloved's, the game found a second life in the 1960's and 70's as society started to readily accept occult and supernatural practices. Movies such as The Exorcist and Witchboard also provided a boost to the potential dark side of their being, while casting an even more unfavorable light onto them in religious circles. Even today, Ouija Boards are still at the heart of many debates and their uses, helpful and harmful, continue to be a hot topic amongst ghost hunters.

One of the lesser known ways of divination that has a potentially dangerous after affect is automatic writing. Automatic writing is the use of the subconscious mind and spirit world to produce messages from the other side. If used properly, this can be a great tool. Many best-selling writers actually claim that they use this when working on novels, letting their mind take them to a higher level of being. Unfortunately, it also has a dark side. The use of automatic writing can also act as a homing beacon for evil, if it is used improperly.

In the case of both the Ouija Board and automatic writing, when a demon is conjured using these means of contact, it usually extremely difficult to vanquish. As a ghost hunter, you should never attempt to work on an investigation if you even suspect a demonic entity is present. Always contact a demonologist, a priest or someone specifically familiar with dealing with this type of phenomena; their experience will be a valuable asset during the entire ordeal.

Needle (2010)

February has arrived and with it, my first retirement check from the government; truly an awesome moment… February is an important month to me, as my birthday is on the horizon and I am sure to have another amazing horror themed birthday cake (definitely one of the highlights of the year). February 1st is also National Signing Day for college football teams, and I have to say my Mountaineers had a very impressive class, one that should help keep Morgantown rocking as we head into Big 12 action. Enough on that though, to start the month out, I decided to kick back and review the interesting flick Needle (2010) prior to heading off to bed.

Plot/ After the death of his father, archaeology student Ben Rutherford inherits an 18th century mechanical device known as "Le Vaudo Mort". At a college party, he flaunts the machine in front of a group of his closest friends and later discovers that the machine has a sinister past and may harbor supernatural powers. After class, he returns to his dorm room to find that the contraption has been stolen. One by one, Ben's friends begin to die in strange and horrific circumstances. Now he must reunite with his estranged half-brother, Marcus, a forensic photographer, and delve deeper into their father's past to work out who is behind the grisly murders. As the terror mounts and the clues seem to suggest the unthinkable, a surprising twist will reveal the identity of the killer.

This teenage / college driven flick is definitely more of a mystery / thriller than straight horror movie. Overall, there are a lot of good things to say about this, the acting is solid, character development good, effects are decent and the storyline is decently original (at least the implement of death). Yes, the pacing is a bit slow as it focused on the characters and story more that the killings, there is little gore and the ending was rather anti-climactic.  In the end, if you like character or story driven thrillers give it a shot, you can do worse. If you are a gorehound, stay away.

Kill Katie Malone (2010)

What a week, started actually teaching FCC regulations to my sixth quarter class (crazy, I take my first FCC exam tomorrow) and on top of that this week is payday with my first post-retirement civilian paycheck… Awesome! Now, time to get back to the blog with the 2010 supernatural thriller Kill Katie Malone.

Plot/ College students and best friends Ginger Matheson, Jim Duncan, and Kyle Canning, pool their cash to buy a ghost online. Once in hand, this treasure unleashes the vengeful spirit of an Irish servant girl who has been wreaking havoc on her owners throughout the generations.

It is funny, going in I figured that this flick would offer little new, and sure enough, I was right. While there was some good points with decent effects, firm acting and solid characterization, much of the flick was just a bit cliché and full of uneven plot holes. This is sad because this movie definitely has some potential and would have benefitted from some high production value and budget. In the end, this one is OK, but could have been better. Check it out if you wish, you could do worse.

American Horror Story - Episode 1 - Pilot

I love October (25 days left until Halloween). In October, networks always introduce programming geared toward horror fans like me. However, it is not often that I actually look forward to a television show (other than Castle), but I had been intrigued by the promo's for American Horror Story. There was definitely something interesting in the idea and concept. Luckily, last night I was able to catch the pilot episode (and not miss it like usually happens).

Plot/ The Harmon family's life is on the rocks, so what do they do? They move across country to Los Angeles, move into a decaying old Victorian home, and watch the troubles melt away. Fortunately, or unfortunately, there is something strange about the house, which has a life and weirdness all its own.

This was an interesting pilot episode, even before combining sexual overtones, scares, and general creepiness. Sure, some of the storyline was confusing and created more questions than answers, but that was to be expected when dealing with enough weirdness to draw horror fans in. The overall look of the show was extremely stylish, with some great colors and detailed cinematography that created a tremendous atmosphere. In the end, this series will not be for everyone. However, for me (and I am sure many), this looks like a strange and winding journey through some dark and surreal corridors, and a journey that I look forward to experiencing every week.

Collecting Haunted Items

In many ways, the paranormal boom of recent years has been a blessing. Not only has it brought a fringe science into the forefront of the adult collective, it has opened the eyes of many skeptics that once overlooked the spirit world that surrounded them. Research in the paranormal has also opened up a new hobby - paranormal collecting. Ironically, to many people, this pastime is nothing new. Collecting items of interest is something many people do to show off their personality. Personally, I have an affinity for hats, especially older hats that I find at estate sales and such. These sales now receive a boost in business from collectors looking to find the next addition to their collection.

Finding these collectibles is the fun part; for many of us, it is like a treasure hunt or a race, hoping to beat someone to that believed one-of-a-kind artifact that can set you apart. However, if you are a paranormal enthusiast, collecting paranormal items can be more challenging than collecting old hats; yet, it too can be a fun and rewarding experience. The biggest endeavor you must undertake if you are interested in this new arena is to understand the gravity of what you are doing.

People must look within themselves and determine whether they can properly care for an item, or if they would be a doorway for a malevolent spirit to manifest itself into. There are good points and bad points to starting a collection; every aspect must be dissected before any item is handled or purchased. Spirits can often become attached to objects through various rituals associated with witchcraft, or be attached to an object that is familiar to the spirit and may have been important to the spirit when the spirit was in human form. With that said, haunted artifacts can have negative energy attached to them, and they must be treated with the utmost care and respect.

In talking with my friend, Demonologist John Zaffis, who takes care of the Museum of the Paranormal in his home state of Connecticut, it is clear that the primary goal is not to be a collector, but to help those innocent victims that have dealt with the strange world that exists outside of the normal train of thought. After 20 years in the field, John has seen everything imaginable in the hundreds of cases he has been involved with as a paranormal researcher. During those years, he has collected hundreds of artifacts from cases of violent hauntings. Inside his museum there are hundreds of supposed haunted items, many of which had to be removed from homes following many unexplained and often negative phenomenon occurring. Fortunately, he is experienced in dealing with the energies that can exist, unlike many of the new collectors that are building their own personal museums today.

In researching this new phenomenon, I was amazed at how many different avenues can exist for budding collectors. A quick eBay search for the word “haunted” brought out over 5,000 auctions for supposedly haunted items. There was everything from jewelry to dolls to everyday household items. Incredibly, an internet search for “paranormal collecting” garners an amazing 2.5 million pages of information. With that in mind, I needed to take a deeper look at this and see what the fascination is.

I rapidly discovered three areas that people focused on. Those are collecting ghosts, haunted items, or paranormal souvenirs from their different ventures. Many of these collectors are paranormal enthusiasts that have taken refuge in this as way to be closer to something they enjoy doing. I also realized when I ventured into my research that many people might be paranormal collectors without even realizing it, and I will use myself as a perfect example of this. As many may know, I have been researching the legend of the Jersey Devil for some time and recently was able to venture into the Pinelands in search of this mythological creature. While conducting my first venture into the Leeds Point area, I discovered that there were hundreds, if not thousands, of discarded bottles littering this area. At first, I was amazed because of the diverse ages in the bottles that we found. Not thinking about the paranormal aspects that could be involved, I picked up a couple of them. At the time, I thought I was doing a public service by cleaning up the salt marsh, and I actually still feel that way. However, my approach to those bottles has changed after I viewed the pictures from my latest investigation into that area. In those pictures, there were numerous strange shadows, orbs and what appeared to be small vortexes appearing in multiple pictures. Of these, one shadow figure is a bit troubling because of the smell that we encountered in the area right before discovering a tree formation that looked like something out of the Blair Witch Project. Those pictures got me thinking, did those bottles have some kind of connection to them? Are they from the generations of interested bystanders that came to Leeds Point to find Mother Leeds’s son? So far, nothing strange has happened to me in the house, but then again, they are still in the backpack because I have not had a chance to do anything with them.

The idea of these bottles potentially having an energy attachment also brought out another interesting twist. It demonstrated how close the many of the fields of unexplained research are intertwined. My search for the Jersey Devil is more of a cryptozoological hunt and not a paranormal research outing. Yet, it demonstrates how unseen paranormal entities surround us at all times. Therefore, all of these precautions should be followed, regardless of the type of investigation a person is working on.

As I mentioned earlier, antique stores, estate sales and thrift stores often become battlegrounds for collectors of all types of items. It is quite possible that items purchased in these stores could have a spirit attachment that can be energized by the buyer. These often come as impulse buys where the purchaser is drawn to an item for some unknown reason. Maybe that was the case when I had to buy that antique wooden wheelchair at the Dusty Attic last year. Did I need it? No! Nevertheless, I had to have it (although, it did work really well as I used it to scare trick or treater’s on Halloween, so it served a purpose).

This happens because the spirit attached to an item may feel a kinship to the buyer, needing that relationship to stay alive. Items can sit for decades before coming to life if the right relationship is not present. People say that not all of these relationships are bad, and that items can actually lead to luck. Energies manifest in many ways, often providing feedback, guidance, wisdom, companionship, powers and even assistance to owners. However, people should be very careful when strange occurrences begin after bringing something into their house.

One of the most readily item available to people and one of the most collected haunted items are dolls. Sure, the appeal is easy to understand, as dolls take people back to their childhood. To me, I still remember the scene with the clown in Poltergeist and cannot fathom purchasing a haunted doll on purpose, but to many, they view these echoes from their childhood as families and children. Many of the dolls available come from owners who are frightened by the doll. Many people panic when paranormal phenomena is experienced near an item and just want to rid themselves of the burden. Ironically, many collectors search for active items, hoping that it was just a spirit trying to communicate with them. Their view is that the doll is a child, acting up or throwing a tantrum to gain attention.

Haunted jewelry may be even more popular than haunted dolls, as many people claim that one can experience everything from love to financial gain just by purchasing and wearing an item. These items supposedly contain energies, djinns, genies or demons and are powerful tools that can help in any facet the imagination can conceive. More importantly for collectors, both males and females can find these items just for them with warlock rings and or goddess pendants all available for the right price.

These are just some of the more popular items available on the internet, and realistically many of them are not haunted by any means. People collect the items during their hunts and those are the ones that can be the most troublesome and require the most care. There are over 5 million pages on the internet referencing some paranormal research organization. People form many of these organizations have limited or no experience in the field, or are just diving into a curiosity spawned by something they saw on television. These are also the ones who are in danger when they collect an item from a haunted area without understanding what can happen in some instances. For many investigators, the idea of gathering or collecting an item from a location is the furthest thing from their mind. They are focused on the scientific aspect of what they are doing and the only collecting that is taken place comes in the form of pictures and EVPs collected as evidence. However, this is not always the case. Items such as furniture, paintings, dolls, soil and even books are discovered at the center of a haunting or strange occurrence and gathered form the foundation of their new collection. Examples of this can be seen in movies such as The Exorcist, where the idol found during the excavation opened the door for the demon to walk in. Television shows have also shown the dark possibilities that exist with energy attachment with popular shows like The Twilight Zone or Friday the 13th the Series, raising the possibility of items possessing the ability to alter reality. Amazingly, many of the people who swear off items such as OUIJA Boards are the same ones who open their hands for a chance to own that strange painting of a castle.

Collecting items such as photographs and EVPs are a perfect way to be a paranormal collector. After all, the best collection a person can have is one that they made themselves. To do this, become a member of a paranormal research team and, after some training, go out and investigate. The evidence that you collect can make for some interesting conversation pieces and create a great atmosphere as decorations. There is nothing better to impress your friends than explaining your evening and then breaking out the evidence to back up your claims. Not only is this a fun way to collect the stuff you enjoy, it is also much safer than purchasing a haunted item that may introduce you to something more dangerous than you were looking for.

Many of the famed locations offer souvenirs that can let you remember the investigation and location. In these cases, go out and investigate, then pick-up a piece of history about the location. Places such as Gettysburg have extensive collections of items available that may hold a larger appreciation than a vial of dirt or a rock from a battlefield. Most importantly, they would be a great addition to any collection.

Paranormal memorabilia is also another great way of collecting paranormal related items. Many of today’s television shows or movies have items available such as pictures, hats, and other interesting finds that can become nice centerpieces to a collection. In addition, with the rise of investigation teams, many items can be found that are made available to help fund research. Purchasing this merchandise is a great way to build a collection while helping other people who are interested in discovering the truth that exists in the shadows.

These options provide great alternatives for creating a remarkable paranormal-related collection. In addition, with our economy in turmoil, they may also offer cheaper options as well. However, as history has shown, not everyone is willing to look at an alternative and many would rather push the limits with the spirit world. In these cases, these collectors need to realize the dangers involved. Like the old adage says, “be careful what you wish for, it may actually come true!”
