Six Days in Roswell (1998)

 

 

It is time to finish off the year. It has been an eventful year as today marks the one-year anniversary of my official military retirement. It is hard to believe. There have been so many changes, especially with me transitioning into a role as an electronics instructor at the institute. I love that job, and the ability to interact with some very smart students. One thing we have discussed is Roswell and some of the coincidence of electronic development after the crash. With that in mind, I decided to watch Six Days in Roswell.

 

 

Plot/ Experts and alleged abductees come together in a town famous for UFO sightings and government cover-ups.

 

 

Have you ever heard of a mindless documentary? If not, this may be the first one out there. Sure, there are some informational spots, but, do not expect any breaking news or intriguing tidbits in this one about the Roswell Crash. In this one, you walk in the shoes of the UFO fanatics that make a pilgrimage to this UFO Mecca and celebrate and embrace the Alien culture. Honestly, this is a documentary of a weeklong UFO themed party in Roswell. More comedic documentary than informative, this does do a great job at showing both sides of the coin from those celebrating and those celebrating the profits from the event. In the end, this one is just a kick back and relax, fun 90 minute ride into a fringe arena. If you believe in Roswell, check it out and see how they celebrate potentially one of the greatest cover-ups in United States history.

1984 (1984)

 

 

As 2012 comes toward an end, it is clear that there is an assault-taking place on open-minded thought and free speech. Everywhere you turn, there is censorship to the highest degree. On top of that, the social networks, computer companies and governments are admitting that the track your every move, manipulate your viewing exposure and read your emails. We are truly in the Big Brother era. With that in mind, I decided to re-watch the classic 1984.

 

 

Plot/ George Orwell's novel of a totalitarian future society in which a man whose daily work is rewriting history tries to rebel by falling in love.

 

 

In looking back at my youth, one of the books that left a lasting impression on me was Orwell’s masterpiece. I not only loved the book, it was the first old-time radio cassettes that I bought. This outline of totalitarian society is a necessary read for everyone and this adaptation is a must see. This movie captured everything in the book in the perfect manner, with a dark, depressing and foreboding atmosphere.  The acting was tremendous, the cinematography amazing, and the scripting was on the mark. If there was a slight flaw, it was that it did not utilize the characterization to its fullest potential, but even that is nitpicking. However, like with the novel, it did capture the message, a significance that every person around the world should take to heart during these dark days of rising tyranny. Just one look at mainstream media in the world today demonstrates exactly what Orwell talked about and what makes this tale one of the most important literary and cinematographic endeavors out there. This is not a conspiracy about Big Brother watching, it is truth. If you have never read this book or watched this film, you must. I can honestly say, if you watch and digest the meaning of this film and apply that knowledge to everything that is happening around the world, your opinion on the direction of society may change. Some people may be turned off by the amount of nudity, but who cares; I highly recommend this for everyone.

 

Frame 313: The JFK Assassination Theories (2008)

 

 

After some mindless Sci-Fi / Horror last night, I decided to venture into something a lot more important. As 2013 creeps into view, many already realize that it marks the 50th Anniversary of the Kennedy Assassination. For many, this event still lacks closure, as the official story just does not add up. Count me in as one of those. To start my year-long research into the subject, I decided to break down and watch Frame 313: The JFK Assassination Theories from 2008.

 

 

Plot/ Frame 313 examines several theories that have been offered about who was responsible for the JFK Assassination including the single bullet theory, the CIA/Mafia theory, the Soviet Union/KGB theory, the Mafia hit theory, and the CIA/Anti-Castro theory.

 

 

This was one documentary that I watched and enjoyed throughout. To me, there definitely seems as if there is something missing from the Kennedy Assassination, and the explanation that was given. Honestly, something just does not make sense. Although, I have only sporadically researched the event, it is clear that there is a ton of missing information and like the 9-11 Commission, the Warren Commission was a joke that did nothing but sugar coat a tall tale. This documentary does a great job at looking at different theories and providing documents and evidence to back them up. This is a great way to go about a film, as it allows the viewer to digest everything and formulate their own ideas and beliefs. Yes, it did drag in some spots, as some of the information felt repetitive, but, for me that was just a minor flaw. In the end, this is a solid documentary that should be seen by history buffs and those, like me, that do not believe that Lee Harvey Oswald was a lone gunman. Personally, I am not sure who did it, but I know that there is something wrong with that storyline. Honestly, one look at the Zapruder Film after the kill shot is enough evidence for me that the kill shot came from the grassy knoll. How do I know that? That is the direction that the police and crowd ran searching for the gunman, not toward the depository.

 

Alien Abduction (2005)

As I am here with the daughters as Brenda is in North Carolina suffering through the unexpected and tragic death of her mother, my movie time is limited to late in the evening. I do this as an attempt to balance, cleaning time and television time with the girls. To this point, it has worked rather well. With that in my mind, I decided on something mindless tonight after a couple episodes of the X-Files, my selection, Alien Abduction from 2005.  

Plot/ After being abducted by extra terrestrials, Jean and her friends are committed to a top secret government run mental institution to undergo tests and be brainwashed.

Low budget entries that involve The Asylum are always a dicey situation. The can run the gambit from horrid to entertaining. With this one, I will admit, falls into the entertaining category. Yes, it does come complete with the signature low budget production values, especially with the alien make-up and effects that are all over the place. Other than that, once you get through some of the storyline flaws, you have an interesting and entertaining flick. The acting is uneven, with some of the performances being extremely good, the look and feel is solid, and the plot made sense on some levels. Yes, there are some characterization issues, but that may go with the uneven acting. In the end, I really enjoyed this low budget entry, as it was entertaining and mindless. Could it have been better with a larger budget, probably? However, with what was available, this one hits the spot. That being said, do not run out and buy it, check it out on Netflix as I did.

The Final Countdown (1980)

As I was sitting here tonight wondering what I wanted to watch, I decided to venture into Netflix to see what they had to offer. Last night, I watched 1984, a classic, and a film that I will review on New Years Eve. That book by George Orwell was ahead of its time, and the film, does a great job at portraying the dark nature of a New World Order scenario. My selection for the evening tonight was another interesting flick, and one, that could also be considered before its time.

Plot/ A modern aircraft carrier is thrown back in time to 1941 near Hawaii, just hours before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.

Films in this particular vein of Sci-Fi and Fantasy are always interesting, and often pose realistic questions about reality, as we know it. Much like the truths behind the mysterious Philadelphia Experiment and subsequent movie, one has to at least think of the weird possibilities that exist in the universe. By all accounts, this is a great film from the era and stands up to time quite well. The acting is above the line, the effects are solid, and the way that actual history was integrated was outstanding. Could it have been better, absolutely, but that can be said about almost any flick out there. In the end, this is a awesome flick and one that, as mentioned, does a great job at exploring the possibilities of a time rift. If you like this genre, you must check out this flick!

The Feeding (2006)

 

 

After watching some slashers, I decided to venture into the mountains for some type of creature driven feature last night. Monsters, whether real or fictitious, always make for somewhat interesting villains, and some are extremely interesting. In the end, I decided upon another low budget entry from earlier in the century. That selection was The Feeding from 2006.

 

 

Plot/ High in the Appalachian Mountains and under a full moon, a timeless evil rises. An awakened predator whose savagery and ferocity are matched only by its insatiable appetite.

 

 

Many of the same items I mentioned yesterday are apparent in this low-grade horror outing. Although, unlike yesterday’s entry The Legend of Bloody Jack, which had The Asylum involved, this one was truly an independent entry. It has the storyline filled with holes and unanswered questions, the acting is just so-so, and the make-up effects on the creature are far from the best. There was a touch of blood and gore, but neither that nor the boobs could make this one rise about others in the vain. In the end, it was somewhat entertaining and did help pass 90 minutes. Would I recommend it? No, not unless you are a diehard werewolf fan and have not ventured into these woods.

 

 

The Legend of Bloody Jack (2007)

 

 

Sometimes you choose movies because they look interesting. Sometimes you choose them because their run time fits into your schedule and it looks like something that would help pass time. That was the case with this selection for late last night. That selection was The Legend of Bloody Jack from 2007.

 

 

Plot/ The legend of insane lumberjack comes to life when one of his descendants revive him.

 

 

Low-grade horror is always a challenge. Of course, as horror fans, we already know that and understand what we are about to see (especially where The Asylum is involved). This flick is much like many films in this vain. It has the typical cliché riddled storyline, the unbelievable acting, and low budget effects that become more laughable with every passing second. That being said, most of it was so overwhelming that somehow it became more comedy than slasher and had some small entertainment value. In the end, this is nowhere near a good movie and technically has many issues. Stay away from it unless you have run out of choices on Netflix.

 

 

Chained (2012)

 

 

It is Christmas Eve and I am waiting on the kids to go to sleep; something that always seems to take forever. While waiting, I decided to throw in a movie to pass my time. Now, I could have gone many different ways, but in the end, I decided on the 2012 psychological thriller Chained.

 

 

Plot/ Bob, a cab-driving serial killer who stalks his prey on the city streets alongside his reluctant protégé Tim, who must make a life or death choice between following in Bob's footsteps or breaking free from his captor.

 

 

This was the first time that I ventured into the mind of Jennifer Lynch. For me, as a total fan of her father David Lynch, I had hoped that some of his genius would soak through, and to me, it did just that. This movies it not your typical horror or slasher flick about a serial killer, it is a much more realistic decent into the darkness. More of a psychological thriller than horror, this movie has a lot to like. The atmosphere is heavy and dismal, the acting is top notch, the direction is spot on and storyline is disturbing and genuine. Sure, there is some odd pacing that seems to drag at times, but to me that just built the tension throughout the flick.  In the end, if you are searching for a straightforward slasher, stay away. However, if you are looking for an unsettling journey into the world of a serial killer give this one a shot.  

 

 

Saint Nick (2010)

 

 

I am all for the holidays, especially when I have some time away from work to settle into watching some decent horror flicks to help pass the evenings. Of course, it does help when I am able to find something enjoyable and entertaining. With that in my mind, I decided to venture into the depths of some holiday horror, with my selection Saint Nick (AKA Sint) from 2010.

 

 

Plot/ A horror film that depicts St. Nicholas as a murderous bishop who kidnaps and murders children when there is a full moon on December 5.

 

 

  

When I saw this one, I had to watch it. Yes, I figured that there would be some dialogue flaws with the conversion, and I was right, but that is just a minor flaw in what turned out to be a flaw-filled endeavor. It is unfortunate, as the movie started out decent enough and at least gave the notion of some promise. I really liked the idea, and was disappointed that the film was not better. The dubbed dialogue was terrible, acting was uneven to bad, the effects poor and editing took something away from the feel. Sure, there was some comedic moments and even some entertaining elements, but too much of it disjointed. In the end, this did deliver at least a small amount of holiday horror. While I would not recommend this highly, I have seen worst movies in this genre and would at least give it a shot if your holiday cabinet is empty. 

 

The Dark Side of the Moon (1990)

Last night I decided to take a break from the blog. I was honestly burnt out from debating people on twitter about the status of our Constitution and the actions that are taking place to infringe on out rights. Of course, it could have also been due to the headache that was caused by the whiteout condition I faced as I headed to the video store. That snowstorm sucked. Today, I decided jump back into the swing of things with a 1990 cult classic, The Dark Side of the Moon.

Plot/ It is the year 2022. A mysterious systems failure causes the crew of a spaceship to be stranded on the dark side of the moon, while rapidly running out of fuel and oxygen. They are surprised to discover a NASA space shuttle floating in space, and board it in the hope of salvaging some supplies. One by one, the crew is possessed and killed,

It is funny, I do not remember hearing about or seeing this flick when it came out in 1990. It is a shame, for I would have probably enjoyed it even more if I would have caught it then. Do not get me wrong, I enjoyed it. While some of the plot seemed a bit cliché, there was a lot to like about the interesting and weaving storyline. Technically, it was a solid film with decent acting, excellent cinematography and a dark dreary atmosphere that fit the premise perfectly. Sure, they may have bit off more than they could chew with demonic possessions, Satan, space shuttles and the Bermuda Triangle, but that is what a good “B Movie” does. Yes, there were some characterization issues, some moments feel outdated and some of the plot was incoherent, but to me it worked. In the end, this movie is entertaining and often goes overlooked. If you enjoy Sci-Fi / Horror flicks, give this vintage B Movie a shot.

Side Sho (2007)

 

As we stand on the eve of the apocalypse, I decided to kick back and watch something mindless. In searching Netflix, I decided to find something that suited me. After all, with this being The Ringmaster’s Realm, and our side business is called Scarlet Circus, some type of carnival or circus horror would fit the bill. That is when I found, Side Sho from 2007.

 

 

Plot/ A suburban family traveling the back roads of the southeast in search of historic roadside attractions finds more than they bargained for when they happen upon a rustic sideshow museum that houses a dark secret.

 

 

When I saw this, I hoped that it would be some solid entertainment for the eve of the apocalypse. This low-budget independent flick may rip off many different flicks in the genre and a flick full of cliché, but it is actually rather entertaining. On the positive side, there are some decent cinematography, ok acting, and some good effects and kills. Yes, the scripting is all over the place and there is zero originality, but it still stands as a simple independent flick. In the end, if you are a fan of Wrong Turn type horror centered on the clichéd exploitation of inbreeding, check this one out. If you are tired of flicks from this genre, stay away, there is nothing here for you.

 

 

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (2012)

 

 

Yesterday, I went back into conspiracy mode and outlined rising HAARP readings across certain areas of the United States. While those readings are still high and I discovered another one of the signs of HAARP devastation today with the eruption of another Central American volcano, there is still no sign of what disaster awaits; although, it could be a blizzard, as a storm is bearing down upon the region with the highest readings. Who knows? To pass some time, I decided to watch something fun, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter from 2012.

 

 

Plot/ Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States, discovers vampires are planning to take over the United States. He makes it his mission to eliminate them.

 

 

I intentionally put this flick off for some time, as I expected it to be another over-hyped horror flick. I was wrong, as I found an extremely entertaining, albeit over-the-top, horror flick that had an original storyline. This action-packed gem is not for everyone, as serious history buffs will have a coronary, but it is well worth the watch. The acting was solid, the action scenes fun and well made and the cinematography and pacing were spot on. Yes, the idea is ridiculous, but the title says that. Yes, there are some flaws; as some of the dialogue may be too comedic, the make-up effects were uneven with their aging and the scripting did leave some holes, but those are small flaws in the grand scheme. In the end, this action-packed horror flick was a joy to watch with vampires being slaughtered around every corner. Sure, it is not for staunch history buffs without a sense of humor, but for the rest of society, I think you should give it a chance.

 

Does HAARP Have A Surprise Instore For December 21st, Readings Point To It

 

 

If you have read my blog, you have seen me outline the potential use of the government controlled HAARP System for Weather Control, and potentially even mind control. It is a devastating system and one, that I believe, has been shown to create havoc across the globe.

 

 

This past week’s episode of Conspiracy Theory went into Mind Control (potentially by CIA and their MK Ultra Program), and ironically mentioned a system, the Ground Wave Emergency Network (GWEN) that may be a partner to that system operating in extremely low frequency band very close to that of the HAARP System. While this system was a command and control communications system intended for use by the United States government to facilitate military communications before, during and after a nuclear war, the antennas could help steer a HAARP signal if they were cascaded together.

 

 

Some will say this is impossible due to location; however, they would be wrong. If military ships can be linked by computer and be controlled remotely, anything is possible. This system creates an a ground-wave that would be almost undetectable, and would be a perfect covert way to transmit the control signals. In all, the network is made up of roughly 300 transceivers with 58 antenna towers spread across the United States.

 

 

While this was just some facts on a HAARP-like relative that could be being used against the American civilization, it is also a chance to potentially warn people in the mid-west and around Las Angeles about rising HAARP readings in your regions. Sure, the signals can come and go, these specific ones jumped in power today to extremely high levels.

 

 

Why is this a concern? Look at the calendar, December 21 is just days away, and what could help give a boost to a government that is taking on water? How about a natural disaster on the date it was predicted that the world would come to an end. Can you say national panic? Of course, it could be time for another controversial and unconstitutional Executive Order. Who knows, but I am sure we will find out in a couple of days.
