Sublime (2007)

With Saturday Night football ending and my first attempt at a Pride, Prejudice and Zombie Statue in the books, I decided to find something to watch. My selection for the evening was the 2007 Raw Feed entry Sublime.  

Plot/ On the day after his fortieth birthday, a man goes to the Mt. Abaddon Hospital for a routine procedure of colonoscopy. Ironically, during his birthday party, his friends and family tell many cases of medical errors. Unfortunately, those stories can come true.  After the surgery, he finds that his surgery had complications because of a homonymous patient, and he had received a thoracoscopic sympathectomy instead. While interned, he disccovers bizarre and dark secrets about the East Wing of the hospital while his wife and family have to take a decision about his fate.

This was definitely not the normal direct to DVD horror flick. Relying more on atmosphere and tension instead of blood, guts and gore, this psychological horror movie is definitely a thinking man’s flick. With that in mind, some viewers may find it slow and boring, and in some ways they are correct. The pacing was drawn out as the dark and detailed (not to mention well written) script was developed through flashbacks and references. All-in-all, the acting and cinematography was solid and there were really not many holes. In the end, I find this an underrated intellectual driven psychological thriller. If you are looking for a gorefest or typical horror flick stay away, but it you are looking for something a bit more mentally challenging, check it out!
