Sanitarium (2013)
After the wide variety of horror flicks I was able to digest while the kids were gone, decided to r take a break for a night. Hell, after anything by Ulli Lommell, anyone deserves a break. To get back into the swing I decided to run to the video store for my next selection, the 2013 independent click Sanitarium.
Plot/ three stories of the mentally ill: 1. Artist begins taking orders from the dolls he exhibits. 2. Eight year old boy, cruel father, concerned teacher and hallucinatory monster come into conflict. 3. Professor convinced of the Mayan apocalypse prophesies, builds bomb shelter to save his family.
When i saw this one at Family Video, i had no idea what to expect. Some of these anthologies can be fun, but others not as much. This one was the typical format, three stories sandwiching a theme or character, and it worked rather well. Not really a horror flick this was more a case study on insanity and how these characters got to the sanitarium. The acting was solid, the cinematography decent, the atmosphere worked and the storylines were interesting, with the first installment being the best. Yes this one did lack blood, gore and violence, but that did not drag it down. If anything, the movie felt disconnected as the characters were not connected by anything other than the doctor and sanitarium, something that slowed the pace a little too much. In the end, this was one of the better low budget anthologies to come out in some time and pacing issues aside, was entertaining. Sure, it m may not m equal its potential, but it is worth watching. Give it a shoot the are worse choices out there.

Zombie Items Created for the 2013 Fayette County Fair
Every year the County Fair comes around and it is always an awesome treat to enter some items to be judged in the different categories. This year was a special treat, as the Fayette County Fair where we live has an extensive Halloween Section. With that being my favorite holiday, I decided to try my hand at a battery of zombie themed items for this year. Here are some pictures of the items I submitted in the different Halloween categories.
Halloween Centerpiece
Halloween Decorative Item
Halloween Statue
Functional Halloween Item
I also created a Halloween themed wreath out of tree branches and a stuffed Raven, for the Halloween category but failed to take a picture of it before submission. We will be there tomorrow to see how the items fared, and I cannot wait. Hopefully, my zombie ideas were not too much for this small rural county.

What the Judges Thought of Our Creations at the Westmoreland County Fair
Today we made our way out to the Westmoreland County Fair to
see how our entries did with the judging. After looking around and seeing the
competition, I believe all of us did extremely well considering it was out
first venture out there.
Upcycled Birdbath
Bedspring Tree
Washboard Birdhouse
Upcycled Projector Lamp
In all, four of my five entries placed, with one second, two
thirds and one fourth place ribbon. Ironically, the item I felt the worst about
(the birdbath) finished with the highest place, and the one I liked the most
(the wreath) did not place. But, oh well, it is all in the eyes of the judges. Bren did well, placing with a nice variety of items,
including her mixed media piece and her lampshades.
The daughters all did well, with Markie taking home the
bragging rights with one first, a third and a fifth place finish in her entries
including the cool dinosaur planter. Jolene and Jillian also did well, although
I do not think the judges quite understood Jillian’s recycled item.

Creations for the Westmoreland County Fair - 2012
Today was finally the day that we would take all of the
stuff we created to the Westmoreland County Fair. Honestly, it is nice to
finally have the stuff completed, allowing the house to get back to some type
of normalcy. In all, there was a lot of cool stuff created (at least, I thought
it was cool). Whether or not the judges see some things the same way is another
question.
For me, I was surprised that I actually completed all five
items I signed up for. While they all did not come out as good as I had hoped,
I think that a couple of them are really good. More importantly, all of the
materials used were upcycled from different pieces we have picked up throughout
different travels. My favorite piece has to be the movie projector lamp (with a
cool shade from Bren). Bren created some cool stuff as well (besides my lampshade)
and looks to continue her success from the Fayette County Fair.

Bren's Upcycled Book Christmas Tree
The girls created some awesome stuff in all of their
categories. Unfortunately, I think that some of their stuff will not be taken
in the same light as we look at it. I guess that is one of the downfalls in
regular society for kids that grow up in the horror / zombie walk community.
But, oh well, that’s life. These are some of the items created by the daughters.

A Trip to See the Oddities of the Fayette County Fair
Yesterday, we gathered all four daughters together for a
trip to the Fayette County Fair. One thing that is always interesting at these
events is the variety of exhibits. Of course, they are very different from when
I was a kid, with some of the modern sideshows and such. This is a travesty, as
honestly, there is nothing better than the world of curiosity and oddities.
Fortunately, society may be changing some with the
popularity of shows like Oddities and now Oddities: San Francisco . If you have read my blog, you
most likely know that I am all for these shops and have started building a
curiosity cabinet.
This same trend seemed to continue at our fair, as there was
again a couple of side show related oddity exhibits, complete with multiple
legged cows, two headed squirrels and four horned goats. I was truly in my
element.
It was also nice to see Brenda and the girls be successful
with the items they entered in to some of the categories. Bren and all four of
my daughters are extremely talented, and sometimes amaze me with their creativity.

Apocalypse Special
As I was sitting here today reflecting on my life and the potential Apocalypse tomorrow, I decided that I cannot take stuff with me. With that in mind, I believe that it is time to clear out some stuff on my ETSY page. Due to the impending Zombie Apocalypse and the end of the world as we know it, anyone can take 10% off any item in my etsy shop this weekend by using coupon code: JUDGEMENTDAY

ETSY Update
As I have had some more time to enjoy my recovery, I decided to put a little more effort into stocking my ETSY page. While none of the items are Earth-shattering, there are some interesting and weird items that I have picked-up from time-to-time.
