Today was another graduation day at the institute, and as
usual, I had to say goodbye to some of the student I have taught. While these
days are exciting for them, knowing a new class with new faces will begin in a
few days is touch unsettling. With that behind me, I decided to check out some
Sci-Fi, with the 2014 entry The Signal.
Plot/ On a road trip, Nic and two friends are drawn to an
isolated area by a computer genius. When everything suddenly goes dark, Nic
regains consciousness - only to find himself in a waking nightmare.
When I saw this on the shelf at Family Video, I was drawn to
it from the synopsis that talked about the surrealistic elements. Those were
definitely present in this non-linear Sci-Fi entry. The performances work, the
pacing methodical, the characters and story are thought out, and the effects
appear to be a higher quality than the limited budget would suggest. Yes, there
are some head scratching moments that seem odd, but those fit into a surreal
environment where normalcy can be thrown out the window. In the end, this movie
may not be for everyone, but it is a refreshing piece of Sci-Fi in a genre full
or retreads and worn out story-lines. If you love Sci-Fi, give it a shot you
will not regret it.
