Sweatshop (2009)

Finally, the weekend is coming to a close and so too is my shark attack ordeal. Do not take that the wrong way, I love watching cheesy Sci-Fi creature features with the daughters. However, two in one weekend may be a little much. After the daughters went to bed last night, I watched two different flicks, Tucker and Dale vs. Evil and Sweatshop; now, I just have to figure out which one to review first. I guess it will be Sweatshop from 2009 as some of the visions of hot, tattooed Goth chicks are still fresh in my mind.

Plot/ A group of friends break into an abandoned factory in order to throw a impromptu party; unaware that it is not as empty as they originally believed.

As many know, low budget horror flicks can be all over the place. Like it or not, they are often unfairly compared to and judged against flicks with ten-times the budget and kick their asses. For me, this was one of those cases. Yes, it will not win any academy awards and it does require an acquired taste as the plot is rough and there is little characterization, but it definitely has a lot working for it (especially considering that it was filmed on weekend over a couple of years). Fortunately those elements come together to form a solid slasher flick that had all the essentials that made that genre great. Yes, the acting was uneven, but the combination of gore, nudity and a larger than life killer truly held serve, not to mention that the special effects were awesome (No crappy CGI either). In the end, this is not for everyone, but if like me you love 1980s horror or the slasher genre (or maybe, goth chick boobs?), you should love this one.

  1. I love 80s horror and I love slashers - but unfortunately this didn't do anything for me. Great gore, great visuals, but boring as hell and every single character was almost unbearable.
