One of the flicks that I picked up at Family Video on Friday
is one of the films from 2012 that received a lot of hype. Of course, usually
when movies receive a lot of coverage, they fall flat. Honestly, it is somewhat
unfair; as there is really no way they can match the amount of hype they
receive. That flick was The Possession from 2012.
Plot/ A young girl buys an antique box at a yard sale,
unaware that inside the collectible lives a malicious ancient spirit. The
girl's father teams with his ex-wife to find a way to end the curse upon their
child.
When I saw the previews for this one, I was on the
fence. Movies with this much hype usually never delivers on their promise, and
while I may be in the minority on this one, this one falls into that category. Supposedly
based upon a true story, there is a lot to like. The acting is solid, the
storyline interesting, the cinematography good, and the last half of the flick
is extremely entertaining. However, it is fairly cliché and the first portion
of the flick is rather slow with some uneven pacing. In the end, this is a
solid flick and one that is somewhat interesting. Sure, it is not the best in
the genre, but it is far from the worst. Check it out if you enjoy this genus
of film.
